In local news

A member of Urban Toronto reports that McVeigh's Irish Pub has closed. No long ago, local media were praising the pub's owners for staying put and resisting the tide of local development. Now, the place is gone.
Neighbourhood chat has focused on the recent closure of The Fox and Fiddle on Wellesley, in the heart of the Village. I've had some good food and drink and nights out there over the years. But for me it's the closing of McVeigh's--after 63 years--that seems the bigger loss.
As I've written before, McVeigh's personified the term "dive bar," and although the clientele had polished itself up a bit in recent years (thanks in part to the proliferation of swank condos in the neighbourhood), the pub itself was dingy and comfy and familiar.
As of today, McVeigh's website is still up, with pictures of the exterior and interior of the pub and listings of the musicians who played there most recently.
