Post-GEnie but pre-LJ, DW, etc., lots of fannish communication took place on mailing lists and Usenet. When ASCEM and ASC were thriving, I was reluctant to post there because I felt that the boards were too public--that is, that too many people I didn't know were lurking there, and for whatever unexamined reason, that made me pretty uncomfortable. I was happiest when communicating on private e-mail groups where membership was by invitation only. That was then.

Now, finally, I'm making a real effort to post to DW occasionally. But Facebook, G+, etc.--nope, never in this universe.  (As for RL LinkedIn--meh. It's useful if you're a freelancer or hoping to advance your career, but I'm at a point where I want way, WAY less business communication, not more.)

Several people have asked about my "no locked entries, ever" policy. What would be the point? I know that if a message is anywhere on the internet, it's potentially public. When I have something private to say to you, I'll say it privately--maybe by e-mail, maybe even in ink, but probably only in words.

I've been in fandom for a long time. Although it wasn't impossible to connect Kathleen Dailey with the person who lived a non-intersecting life in Mundania, it would have taken some work. But now I'm trying a little harder to keep the two realms separate, and the sudden flutter of interest in G+ has me wondering about how long that will be possible for anyone.
