Not quite five things

1. Navigating the healthcare system on behalf of a very suddenly, and very seriously, ill loved one is an exhausting and unending challenge. But it happens that a close friend is a physician, and if she weren't in my life to interpret, explain, and counsel, I'm not sure how I'd be able to cope. I can't imagine how those without family or advocates manage (though I may end up in exactly that position myself someday).
2. Having neighbour cats living just down the hall is a delight. Their humans and I have a lovely symbiotic relationship: they get to go away for vacations knowing that their girls are safe and well taken care of, and I get four days of giving and receiving catlove. A healthy and productive arrangement for all.
3. I haven't yet seen either Barbie or Oppenheimer. But from what people have said, I'm guessing that the experience of seeing the two films in close succession might be similar to seeing "Those Old Scientists" and "Under the Cloak of War" on Strange New Worlds within 24 hours. I can't say how the moviegoers feel, but I'm still in a state of mental and emotional whiplash. Both episodes were very good, in their respective ways, but wow--from light to dark in a millisecond, it seems like.
4. In the interests of escapism, I've been reading lots of Spock-centric fic recently, and I'm struck by how many current writers--leaving aside the creators of purpose-built PWPs--spend almost no time establishing the events and motivations and character points that explain how and especially why Spock and the pairing-of-choice fall in love, or even in lust. Maybe we've all seen so many incarnations of Spock that we feel that we know him thoroughly and he just doesn't need any further in-depth investigation. Or maybe that's just how fanfic rolls right now. Still, I'm kinda longing for the contemporary equivalent of Claire Gabriel's or Killabeez's work. Both authors took their sweet, perceptive, and revelatory time bringing their protagonists together.
