Trivial thoughts

Current events and public life (in the US, Canada, and overseas) are so discouraging and overwhelming--and threatening--that I'm trying hard to avoid worrying about them for a minute. Random trivia follows.
1. I feel like I can remember having seen many of these Chicago tile patterns back in the day. Compliments to those responsible for this amazing archive.
2. When did "partake" become a synonym for "participate"? Evidently no one says "partake of [a food]" any longer; "partake in [an activity]" seems to be widely accepted. An editor told me that people confuse "partake" with "take part," so maybe that explains it. Regardless, it's jarring (to my ear, anyway).
3. The most recent snowstorm made navigating intersections (blocked by un-bobcatted four-foot-tall snowplow-generated berms) even more difficult than it was last week. I watched (from my window--I haven't been outside since Friday morning) an able-bodied young woman nearly take a header into the slushy abyss just trying to get from the curb on one side of Church Street to the curb on the other. People who are not aged 25 and fit don't stand a chance. The city is now saying it could take three weeks to clear the snow ...
4. What a potential "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel can learn from the failed "Veronica Mars" revival. A new non-Whedon team will be in charge of the sequel, if it actually happens.
5. Right now only one of my close RL pals is in Canada; the rest of them are, variously, in Cuba, India, Italy, Florida, and Mexico. Only one of that group is travelling solely for pleasure--the others are engaged in spiritual exploration, home-selling research, and estate-settling duty. I miss them; WhatsApp and FaceTime and email are no substitute for their living, breathing presence.
6. Filming on the first season of Star Trek: Academy has wrapped. I didn't know that Tatiana Maslany had been cast in a recurring role. That's good news!
