I guess such dramatic transitions--hearing, gait, balance--are especially hard to adapt to, maybe because they're precursors of more serious losses of our independence. Other stages of life give us a bit more of a gentle progression of change, but it seems that once you pass a certain point in the aging process, everything happens at once.
