Yes, those older reference books--for example, The Star Trek Compendium, The TNG Companion, The DS9 Companion, The Star Trek Encyclopedia, and especially Bjo Trimble's Star Trek Concordance--were so helpful.

I haven't kept up with current Trek publications, so I don't know whether updated editions or new titles are available. The Trek universe has expanded so much that I imagine most writers just head over to Memory Alpha if they have to verify a character reference or a data point.
