Five gratitudes, big and small, for Thanksgiving
Monday, October 9, is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Despite everything bad that's happened this year, I'm still going to say "thank you" to the universe for all that's good.
1. Even though Thanksgiving 2023 won't be quite what I'd wanted it to be (that would have been an elegant sit-down dinner with old friends at my place), I'm thankful to be living safely with my loved one in Toronto. Long may that continue.
2. Those old friends mentioned in point 1? I'm grateful that we're still in each other's lives after so many years. We've accompanied one another through our various and sometimes precarious careers in filmmaking and book publishing and law and art, and through the unpredictable changes and challenges of our lives. Although our decades-ago fantasy of buying a big mansion together and living out our lives in elderly communal luxury is never going to become reality, my hope is that we'll still stick together to the end, or as close to the end as we can manage.
3. Hudson and Rex is back for a new season. True, Rex is by far the best main-cast actor in the series, but it's lovely to see Canadian scenery and Canadian performers (and, in the season premiere, whales!) on the screen. Not sure about Charlie's new 'do and clothing style. I guess that curly is cute and black is beguiling on the actor in RL--but the changes to the fictional character make me think that something traumatic or dramatic must have happened to Charlie over the summer. His colleagues at SJPD probably have plenty of (unexpressed) opinions on his new look. We'll see whether it lasts in subsequent eps.
4. Surreal Estate is also back, finally! Unlike Charlie's style, Luke's hasn't changed. But his pouting about his lost mojo doesn't flatter him one bit. The ghost-of-the-week wasn't interesting, but it was good to see Susan flourishing despite Luke's unpleasantness. (She's treading on some questionable ethical ground, though--she had better pay the full market value for her dream house and make full disclosure to her client.) I wanted more Zooey, but the little bit that we got was YES. I would be happy to see Megan relocate far away, and permanently.
5. Two politicians (yes, politicians) for whom I'm extremely grateful: Wab Kinew (the new premier of Manitoba) and Greg Fergus (the new Speaker of the House of Commons). It's way, way past time.
Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating.
