Geeking out at Storm Crow Manor with a pal

I took my pal F. out to lunch today for her birthday. We've known each other, both as colleagues and as friends, for decades, and over the years we've spent a whole lot of time socializing, dining, clubbing, and generally celebrating each other's special occasions.

The pandemic has cramped our style (we're both Of a Certain Age, so we've been extremely vigilant), but we finally decided it was time for some actual fun. I offered her a choice of venues, and she chose Storm Crow Manor, which describes itself as follows: "Toronto's geekiest bar! Opened in late 2018 in an elegant Church St mansion, it includes a sanity-shattering array of theme rooms, secret doors, catacombs, cyberpunk bars, glowing, bubbling cocktails, randomly-generated burgers and, oh yeah, tentacles."

Indeed, all those elements were present, including the giant Cthulhu-like tentacles emerging from the Dundonald Street side of the building. The food (with fannishly punnish names that are perhaps not quite as clever as they could be) is serviceable pub fare. The drinks are fun; we stuck to red wine and beer--though to absolutely no one's surprise I was momentarily tempted by "Romulan ale"--but we did get to see the table beside us (six people, obviously also celebrating) order many of the glowy, alien-bar-type bubbly cocktails (pictured in the link above).

It was so good to catch up on life events and friends-and-family news. Somehow no amount of texting, emailing, or zooming can equal the sheer uncomplicated pleasure of sitting across a table from a loved one and actually using one's words.

I have a soft spot for that place, kitschy as it is. I have one of the shot glasses you can get by rolling a natural D20.
