3. Beta readers--you're right, having access to a group of trusted writers and editors in one's fandoms is a huge advantage when seeking a beta. Someone mentioned that a guide to beta reading is posted on AO3 (I'm guessing that it's this one, though there may be others). IMO, betas who are willing and able to offer a careful, knowledgeable reading and a rigorous critique are gifts from the goddess.

5. Oh, god, Metrolinx--the social and environmental devastation it's causing is apparently unstoppable. When the trees at Osgoode Hall were cut down, I pretty much gave up hope. I figured that if the members of the Law Society--all those high-powered lawyers and judges with their immense clout--couldn't make an injunction stick, nothing and no one could. (Certainly not the residents of the Moss Park neighbourhood, who lost 60+ trees at the same time as Osgoode Hall.) And now almost 3,000 trees in the Don Valley are evidently doomed. You (and the birds and critters that probably enjoyed and depended on the railroad-embankment trees behind your house) have my complete sympathy and empathy.
